Boyzie Cekwana

Tutus, bombs and live chickens: the provocative and powerful work of the choreographer, dancer and teacher Boyzie Cekwana flies in the face of convention. Born in Soweto, he lives and works in South Africa where he endeavours to develop cooperative artistic projects in Africa and the rest of the world

Boyzie Cekwana’s work has entered the repertoire of renowned companies such as the Scottish Dance Theatre and The Washington Ballet. Since 1996 he has been artistic director of the Floating Outfit Project, and is currently developing a new group calle Swartgevaar (black menace)—a term used during apartheid to refer to the supposed threat posed by the majority black population to the white South African government. Although a familiar face on the international scene—he has danced, taught, presented his work and lectured in Africa, Europe, South and North America—Boyzie Cekwana has chosen Africa as his base. Since 2001 he has been building a productive working environment and has forged strong partnerships with several artists who share his worldview. Faustin Linyekula, Opiyo Okach and Panaibra Gabriel Canda, among others, work with him via “guerrilla networks”, developing what they call the “African Thought Factory”.
