Aïchoucha

Khalil Epi

Lyon / Tunis
music video

Tunisian musician Khalil Epi takes on an immersive musical and cinematic journey through his native country, seeking out traditional folk music that is still alive today. Blending electronic music and video, he maps out a sensitive itinerary forming a bridge between two shores of the Mediterranean, between past and present, tradition and creation.

Alone on stage, the producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Khalil Epi electrifies images filmed in Tunisia and makes the music dance in an immersive performance sweetly titled Aïchoucha: a personal tribute to his grandmother Aïcha, who used to sing him Sfaxian lullabies when he was a child. Here, accompanied by his machines and synthesizer and facing three panoramic screens, the artist draws inspiration from the technique of “ultra-score” invented by composer Christophe Chassol, combining live music and images from different regions of Tunisia in total synergy. He embroiders his own score, enriches and amplifies the repertoire, and offers a wonderful resonance to the chants of the Awamriya brotherhood, from the Tbal of Kerkennah to the Sahli of Tataouine. This is a new artistic experience for Khalil Epi, who for over a decade has been giving multi-facetted performances at the crossroads of electro-pop, jazz, rock, classical and folk music from all over the world. It's also a hypnotic journey for the audience, immersed in the myriad human and audio-visual landscapes of Tunisia past and present.
