Since his solo Aaleff, Taoufiq Izeddiou has asserted his presence and sensitivity on the international stage, and each show is richer and more powerful than the last: Jadibia, Rêv’illusion, En alerte. His new production, inspired by the work of the Colombian painter Botero, focuses on generously proportioned bodies, which are considered non-standard in some cultures and beautiful in others. These plus-size dancers are far removed from the conventional images of fashion shows or contemporary dance. With his company Anania in Aix-en-Provence, the choreographer creates something unique, somewhere between attraction et repulsion, normality and marginality. He turns codes on their head, flaunts conventional diktats, and writes his own set of rules with performers whose movements generate a palette of sounds that are amplified to form the score for Botero en Orient.
