In the realistic setting of a skatepark, the Danish choreographer celebrates grass-roots urban cultures and refers to a communal practice where technique vies with perseverance, rap provides the rhythm for acrobatic jumps and gravity-defying stunts turn into lighter-than-air dancing. Figures and acrobatics echo the movements of life.

Since the first skatepark was built in Arizona in 1965, the discipline has continued to attract skateboarders and to transform public space into an open-air playground. This “revolution” has inspired Mette Ingvartsen to create a special choreography that surfs on the surface of the city, made up of skilled stunts, new feats of balance and gravity-defying jumps, all fired with feverish energy. But that’s not all: beyond shared physical experiences, the Danish artist encourages intercultural and intergenerational connections between dancers, skateboarders and the community that uses skateparks in Marseille. She talks about the sense of physical joy and sensations of vertigo, the human relationships that develop, and their representation in public space. It’s a way of “understanding dance as a social phenomenon” connected to the world we live in.
