Ief Spincemaille

A playful viva voce for a non-academic thesis

After a three-year collaboration with the inventor of Rope, the Belgian artist and researcher Ief Spincemaille, the Festival offers him an unusual setting for the viva voce of his PhD thesis titled Public Defense. The thesis deals with his experience of artistic work in a “non-artistic” context and explores the concept of relational aesthetics borrowed from Nicolas Bourriaud.
How can his work be made accessible to all, with humour and poetry?
Based in 46 simple ideas printed on balls, our PhD student invites several volunteers to play with the balls in their daily lives for a week. By doing this, they become the “citizens’ jury” for a new kind of viva voce, informed by thoughts, images and encounters.
