Born near Algiers in 1931 to working-class parents, proud of her Arab and Berber roots, admired by André Breton and Albert Camus, Baya drew inspiration from Algerian heritage, music and literature to develop a unique body of work until she died in 1998. The Centre de la Vieille Charité reveals the power of her work through over 150 paintings, drawings and ceramic objects from the collections of the Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, the Centre National des Arts Plastiques, the Musée de la Musique - Philharmonie de Paris and the Fondation Kamel Lazaar. A contextual, post-colonial and feminist approach to Baya’s career, supported by a large number of previously unseen documents, provides an insight into the true scope of her talent. A sensitive, musical, immersive exhibition that pays tribute to the vibrant colours that characterise her work.
