Bruno Beltrão

dance French Premiere

Coproduction

Rio de Janeiro I duration : 60'

Bruno Beltrão’s productions and the astonishing skills of his dancers, all from the favelas of Rio, roll back the limits of hip hop. Their latest highly committed show takes inspiration from the idea of walking and alludes to the long march faced by the world’s migrants.

without borders

Leaving, staying a while, walking, opening up new pathways: the Grupo de Rua hip hop dancers, with their infectious energy, keep on dancing. Back and forth they go—even when the ground seems to turn into a river. The road they end up taking is still unpaved. “The migrant is a pioneer of an open world”, in the words of a French sociologist, and this was the starting point for Bruno Beltrão, who is well known for having pulverised the codes of hip hop, turning it into a more innovative mode of expression. Here, in response to the paths thousands of people take each day to build a better future for themselves, the choreographer—who yearns for a world where free movement would be a positive sign of change—has designed a procession-like performance that optimistically explores all the various facets of walking.

Co-production Festival de Marseille. Performance presented in collaboration with Theater der Welt (Hamburg) and Wiener Festwochen (Vienna).
