Kawthar Younis

The Festival de Marseille and L’Alhambra present the first feature-length documentary by Kawthar Younis. The young Egyptian filmmaker embarks with her father on an adventure to the heart of memory, telling a sensitive autobiographical story full of humorous touches.

A present from the past tells the story of a family, but it's also a story about cinema and, above all else, a love story. He is a film professor; she has just graduated from the Cairo Film School, and her work has already attracted attention from the greatest festivals in the country. For his 75th birthday, Mokhtar receives a wonderful gift from Kawthar: two plane tickets for Rome. Father and daughter set off with just an address, retracing the steps of a love story Mokhtar left behind him more than thirty years ago. Filming with a hidden camera and using old family photos, the filmmaker captures the very essence of a father-daughter relationship.
