Boris Charmatz

A dancer, choreographer and creator of experimental projects such as the Bocal pop-up school and the Musée de la Danse, Boris Charmatz subjects dance to formal constraints that redefine its scope. This year he has been appointed director of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.

After heading the Musée de la Danse (Centre Chorégraphique National de Rennes et de Bretagne) from 2009 to 2018, in January 2019 he launched [terrain], an organisation located in the Hauts-de-France Region associated with the Phénix Scène Nationale in Valenciennes, the Lille Opera and the Maison de la Culture in Amiens. Boris Charmatz was also supported by Charleroi Danse (Belgium) from 2018 to 2022. His work has been presented in many countries.

From À bras-le-corps (1993) to Somnole (2021), he has created a series of landmark pieces including Aatt enen tionon (1996), enfant (2011), created for the Cour d’Honneur at the Festival d’Avignon, and 10000 gestes (2017). He designs projects combining audience participation with curatorial approaches in public space and outdoor performing arts venues. They include Fous de danse, A Dancer’s Day and 20 danseurs pour le XXe siècle et plus encore.
He has written several books (Entretenir/à propos d’une danse contemporaine, 2003, co-written with Isabelle Launay; Je suis une école, 2009), and is also a dancer (working with Odile Duboc, Médéric Collignon, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Tino Sehgal).

In 2021, Boris Charmatz premiered La Ronde at the Grand Palais before it closed for refurbishment and created the performance titled Happening Tempête for the opening of the Grand Palais Éphémère. In July of the same year, he opened the Manchester International Festival with Sea Change, a choreographic piece in urban space with 150 amateur and professional dancers.
In September 2022, Boris Charmatz took over the directorship of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, developing a new project between Germany and France called [terrain].
