Lisaboa Houbrechts

Lisaboa Houbrechts is a young Belgian writer and stage director. Her bold, baroque, playful work references history and the classical repertoire in a ritualised framework and envisions humanity as a chain of desire.

Lisaboa Houbrechts (b.1992) obtained her masters degree in theatre from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent (KASK) in 2016. She founded the Kuiperskaai company with Victor Lauwers, Romy Louise Lauwers and Oscar van der Put. Since 2017, Houbrechts has taken part in P.U.L.S., a project at the Toneelhuis that explores the relationship between performance and the audience.  Her love for exuberance, visual power and music are visible in her dazzling performances such as The Winter’s Tale, 1095 and more recently Hamlet, described in the press as an “explosion of energy”: “Language is colour, acting is images, music is painting”. In 2019 she directed her first show, entitled Bruegel.
