Depois do silêncio (Après le silence)

Christiane Jatahy

theatre cinema French Premiere

Rio de Janeiro

Trailblazing artist Christiane Jatahy makes friction between theatre and film into a “third creative zone”. Her new piece, a “fictional documentary” that attempts to connect the present with the past, exemplifies this concept as it deftly unpacks burning issues in her native Brazil.

Cleverly establishing dialogue between actors and audience, Christiane Jatahy takes inspiration from literature to build a show based on Torto Arado by the Bahia-born geographer Itamar Vieira Junior and the film Um cabra marcado para morrer by Eduardo Coutinho. Her love for her native land is expressed by two young sisters in a fazenda da sertão [farm] in Bahia that Jatahy makes her own. She is an actor, director and filmmaker who defends the idea of a “theatre of commonality”—theatre as a place to gather and reflect. Her unique style, which simultaneously presents living spaces and performance spaces, muddies the waters. Once again she makes her mark in this opus exploring the tensions between fiction and realitu, artistic forms, local issues and global repercussions. Is the struggle of a farming community, descended from slaves, to preserve its land, its freedom and its identity not a universal cause? Is it not a message of hope for all oppressed peoples?
