Borderlines

Panaibra Gabriel Canda

dance French Premiere

Maputo

The body as a territory. Five performers bear the wounds and scars of Mozambique, torn apart by five consecutive wars. But in these very wounds lies the potential for reconstruction and reconciliation.

Sixteen years of civil war have overcome the oppression and injustice of authoritarian leaders. Maputo’s most emblematic choreographer uses bodies and sound to tell the chaotic story of his country and its fractured society. The characters dance against prejudice relating to origins, gender, faith and religion. Playing on the notion of repeated humiliation, rejection and violence, Gabriel Panaibra Canda never allows the tension to fade as he seeks out an intimate balance between the Self and the Other – but to achieve this, demons must be faced.

MEETING with the artistic team Tuesday, July 6 after the performance.

With the support of Onda - Office national de diffusion artistique. Organised as part of the Africa2020 Season, with the support of the French Institute and the Committee of Patrons of the Africa2020 Season.
