NOT ANOTHER DIVA...

HLENGIWE LUSHABA ET FAUSTIN LINYEKULA

dance music French Premiere

Co-production

Johannesburg / Kisangani

Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula and South African performer Hlengiwe Lushaba dreamed of music to warm up the soul. In Not Another Diva…, bodies and songs are set in motion around the figure of the female artist, reflecting on the place of women in the South African society today.

The dancer, choreographer and director Faustin Linyekula always introduces himself as a “storyteller”. The story of Not Another Diva…, written with the South African actress and singer Hlengiwe Lushaba, is a down-to-earth portrait without glitter of another kind of diva. Beyond misery and tragedy, a diva anchored in the present is reborn, free to dream and choose her destiny. On stage, stories, songs, Congolese and South African rhythms come together in a “jam session” with musical and cultural connections, which also makes political observations on post-Apartheid South Africa. We could almost be in the courtyard of the Faustin Linyekula’s Kabako Studios in Kisangani, where anything is possible: playing, dancing, singing, and telling stories (including about things that hurt us) with no fear of being judged.
