Requiem : Fire in the Air of the Earth

A.I.M by Kyle Abraham

dance French Premiere

New York

Accomplished, elegant and explosive, every piece by Kyle Abraham, a leading figure in the New York contemporary dance scene, is an event. His vision of Mozart’s Requiem in D minor is no exception, as it shifts our perspective with its explicitly Afro-American angle, its combination of several choreographic languages, and the fertile dialogue it establishes between Mozart and Jerrilynn Patton alias DJ Jlin.

With great visual and narrative power, Kyle Abraham’s new piece explores the traditional themes of the requiem—ritual and rebirth—but in his own explosive way. The solemnity and transcendent power of Mozart’s Requiem, a masterpiece of western classical music, remain intact, but they are seen through the prism of Abraham’s political commitments and his approach to dance, which charges bodies with energy. Here, bodies undulate in supple electric movements, sometimes taut and vibrant, sometimes letting go. Along with Jerrilynn Patton, one of the foremost DJs on the electro scene, Abraham gradually appropriates the motifs of the original composition to create a new opus performed by ten amazingly expressive dancers. The piece, which is a fundamental stage in Abraham’s journey as a dancer and choreographer, is part of his exploration of Black culture and history—a story of terror and melancholy, of fury and renunciation.
