It’s the true story of a young Afghan called Jawad, who was arbitrarily declared to be of age by the Belgian authorities in 2022. Since then, he’s vanished, but his memory is still very much alive, so much so that a party is organised to celebrate his 18th birthday (which he hasn’t reached). People get together, blow out candles, inflate colourful balloons, say many happy returns… Real or invented testimonials are spoken. Words and poems are recited “to experience a three-stage metamorphosis: past, present and a possible shared future”. A kaleidoscopic story takes shape to the sound of a superb score combining the warmth of brass instruments, the flow of rap, and rhythmic percussions that electrify those taking part. Arising from the director’s experience in a centre for child asylum seekers, Les Oiseaux Rares takes the form of a joyful cabaret under the trees performed by a team of teenagers and professionals, intended to make us aware of their reality and showcase their talents. When asked what we have in common, these minors, migrants, teens and artists all reply: “we love to party!”
