For Radouan Mriziga, the musicality of the deserts stretching from the Atlantic to Persia and India differs from that of the mountains and the sea. Each landscape has its animals, its plants and its peoples; each has its own sounds and rhythms. These elements, sensations and images are choreographed by Mriziga in collaboration with six dancers from contemporary dance and hip-hop.
All remarkable for their precision, presence and power—whether solo, in twos or all together—they embody an imaginary bestiary, enhanced by delicate costumes. The sole woman in the cast, statuesque and commanding, Tunisian DJ and producer Deena Abdelwahed performs live, blending electronic pulses with melodies born in the Sahara and travelling from Egypt to the Gulf and the deserts of India, shaping a spellbinding sonic landscape.
Like an arid land traversed by a joyful sense of fraternity and contagious energy, Magec / the Desert resonates on all sides with the voices of the desert, where life and movement seem to arise from magic.
