Born in a small village in the Peloponnese, Christos Papadopoulos embraced theatre and dance in Athens and then in Amsterdam before joining Dimítris Papaïoánnou’s company for eight years. Following the success of Elvedon, Opus, Ion and Larsen C, he received a string of commissions from ballet companies that loved his minimalistic style and his visual world. In Mycelium, created for twenty dancers at the Opéra National de Lyon, he referenced mysterious ramifications and networks of underground filaments to create “a fascinating ecosystem in a perpetual state of metamorphosis”. In Larsen C, he magnified a combination of vibrating sounds and undulating bodies with an innate sense of ensemble work. Avoiding spectacular effects, it was like a powerful yet discreet ocean wave. These masterful shows reflected the same preoccupations: a feeling for the landscape, the contemporary history of his native Greece, and the links between music and literature. These three elements are omnipresent in My Fierce Ignorant Step, an exploration of movement inspired by the music of Míkis Theodorákis and Mános Hadjidákis, two major figures in Greek artistic and political life.
