Fatoumata Diawara

music

Bamako

An ambassador of Malian culture and an active spokeswoman for modern Africa, Fatoumata Diawara brings her unique voice, sound and message to the Festival de Marseille.

With Tito Bonacera on bass, Yacouba Kone on guitar, Arecio Smith on keyboards and Jean Baptiste Gbadoe on drums, Fatoumata Diawara’s voice has thrilled audiences in capital cities all over the world. Her albums Fatou and Fenfo, her appearances in the films Timbuktu and Yao with Omar Sy, her duet with Bobby Womack and her collaboration with Mathieu Chedid have drawn many accolades. This global recognition allows her to constantly develop her folk, blues, jazz and pop repertoire and to proclaim her anti-slavery messages: Fenfo means “I have something to say!” Rooted in both Europe and Africa, her music is a wonderful way of getting her message across.

The first part of the evening will be performed by Justin Valiha, Joel Rabesolo and Hanta. Three internationally renowned artists have come together for a new creation, Masoala. A meeting between the delicate chords of the guitar, traditional instruments and Hanta's bewitching voice, mixing the influences of polyphonic songs from the south of Madagascar and jazz sounds.

The concerts will be preceded by a meeting organised in partnership with SOS MEDITERRANEE, "Femmes en Méditerranée, regards croisés", in the company of the navigator Alexia Barrier, Hara Kaminara, photographer on mission aboard the Aquarius, journalist Emmanuelle Chaze, on board the Ocean Viking during the last rotation and Sophie Beau, director and co-founder of SOS MEDITERRANEE.

Evening presented in co-production with the Africa Fête Festival and in support of SOS Méditerranée.
