Mal, embriaguez divina

MARLENE MONTEIRO FREITAS

dance

Lisbonne / Cap-Vert

The latest creation by the extravagant Cape Verdian choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas takes as its main subject the figures and numerous incarnations of evil.  A total artist faithful to her dark yet festive world of excess, Marlene Monteiro Freitas captivates  our gaze from the very beginning and never lets it go.

Her performance space is made up of a few benches, a staircase that looks like a grandstand and a series of superb folded, cut out and transformed paper figures, Marlene Monteiro Freitas takes nine dancers on a fascinating journey that is both excessive and essential. In a maelstrom of metamorphoses and hybridisations inspired by childhood celebrations where carnival and music were key, including mechanical ballet, gurning faces, Afro-Brazilian music and percussion, she exposes and explodes the roots of evil from every angle—biological, religious, legal, moral—and undertakes an implacable satire of totalitarianism and colonialism. Inspired by writers including Georges Bataille and Hannah Arendt, this intense performance takes us down to the depths    and up to the summits, where intoxicating evil expresses itself without words but with playfully caustic poetry.
