The Organon company presents a rewriting of Bertolt Brecht’s play The Mother with residents of the Belle de Mai neighbourhood and authors Ilonah Fagotin and Eva Doumbia. Together they transform the stage into a festive space celebrating the power of mothers.

Eighty people occupy the stage: men, women, mothers, teenagers from schools in the 3rd arrondissement and students from the Conservatoire Pierre-Barbizet in Marseille. The new long-term project presented by Organon Art Cie embodies a unique documentary approach involving exploratory research and the development of a theatre laboratory. Collaborative workshops, collected stories based on different situations, intersecting artistic practices and regular public work sessions bring everything together and allow the participants to find their marks. This common thread has already attracted the attention of the curators of the 16th Contemporary Art Biennale in Lyon, which presented their previous creation inspired by Aeschylus’ The Suppliants. With this new project, the company creates a composite piece made up of texts, singing, dance and music, testifying to a powerful leap of emancipation. The challenge was to make us recognise “the particular socio-political existence of a de-politicised identity that is both instrumentalised and mistreated: that of mothers”, and to invite the audience to consider the creative process and its presentation as being just as important as the work itself.
