Taoufiq Izeddiou

Moroccan-born choreographer Taoufiq Izeddiou, now based in Aix-en-Provence, works in both Africa and Europe, creating pieces that explore the tensions between tradition and modernity, individual and community, and new ways of thinking about dance.

He discovered contemporary dance in Marrakech through what he describes as unconventional, self-directed training. Working with Bernardo Montet, then director of the National Choreographic Centre in Tours, marked his entry into the world of professional dance in 1997. In 2002, his performance in Suzanne Buirge’s Danse Nord brought him international recognition.

He created his first choreography in 2000 and, in 2003, founded Anania, Morocco’s first contemporary dance company, following the success of Fina K’enti. In 2005, he launched the international festival On Marche à Marrakech, which he continues to direct.

Deeply committed to teaching, he established Morocco’s first contemporary dance training programme, Al-Mokhtabar (“The Laboratory”), and later developed further initiatives including Nafass (“The Breath”).
