Éric Minh Cuong Castaing – Cie Shonen

Marseille
dance party Creation

Éric Minh Cuong Castaing maintains his close connection to the Festival de Marseille, revealing a celebration performed with the Palestine-born Lebanese musician Rayess Bek and eight dancers from the Levantine diaspora. Inspired by dabkeh dance, about a hundred dancers will gradually carry the audience away, letting sensations, experiences and emotions run wild in a huge collective surge

Choreographer and visual artist Éric Minh Cuong Castaing explores movement with the idea of making invisible or constrained bodies visible again through a kind of dance that recreates connections. His social, therapeutic, intergenerational and intercultural approach is illustrated in Tarab, which invites bodies and minds to move in an almost trance-like state. Tarab is the voice of poetry, music and song; it’s a voice that gives rise to intense emotion and an almost ecstatic state. A communion of the senses inspired by Levantine contemporary music, guided by Éric Minh Cuong Castaing’s choreography and performed by both amateur and professional dancers. Leaving behind the interactions between humans and humanoid robots that featured in his previous shows exploring dance and technology (L’Âge d’or and Forme(s) de vie), he turned to the idea of a choreographic and musical celebration (Sous Influence). Tarab focuses on the raw, almost mystical emotion caused by music, rhythm, moments of silence and breathing, making the idea of “dancing together” truly meaningful.
