Dada Masilo's The Sacrifice

A leading figure in South African dance, Dada Masilo offers a unique new version of the Rite of Spring infused with Tswana dance and ritual, showing her talent for reinterpreting the classical repertoire with humour and impertinence.

From Romeo and Juliet to Carmen and from Swan Lake to The Sacrifice, Dada Masilo’s performances draw from the classical European dance repertoire. She mixes genres, techniques and musical styles, reinterpreting myths to produce refreshing or iconoclastic new versions. Inspired by Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, with original music by Philip Miller, The Sacrifice is a choral piece rooted in her fascination for the dance and ritual used by the Tswana people of Botswana to tell stories or as part of healing ceremonies. She is eager to explore what sacrifice used to mean, and what it means today: “Stories are very important to me. I want to tell a story that goes beyond dance to the death of a designated young girl.”
