Sofiane Chalal

Born in Maubeuge in 1986, Sofiane Chalal followed in his brothers’ footsteps and began dancing at an early age, quickly turning dance into a lifelong pursuit. Trained in hip-hop and shaped by battles, competitions, and leading urban dance practitioners, he has developed a distinctive physical language—grounded, precise, and deeply expressive—that has brought him to international stages.

Together with his brothers and other dancers, he co-founded Label Metis, presenting work and regularly competing in choreographic contests across northern France. By the age of ten, he was already performing; at twelve, he appeared as a support act for Franck II Louise at La Villette. He remained closely tied to the hip-hop scene, becoming a key figure in Maubeuge’s Secteur 7. From age seventeen onwards, he taught regularly, stood out in battles, and trained with leading performers.

From 2015, he began working in contemporary dance, working with choreographers such as Farid Berki (Stravinski Remix, 2015), Christophe Piret (Barbaresques, 2016), and Brahim Bouchelaghem (CRIII, 2018). He created his first piece as a duo with Aziz El Yooussoufi (Sofaz, 2017), then founded his company, Chaabane, in 2018. His solo Ma part d’ombre (2022) represents a milestone in his career and has already been performed more than 150 times.

Highly active on social media, he produces and shares short choreographic films that reach a wide audience. Actor and director Michèle Laroque discovered his work and invited him first to choreograph and then to appear in her film Alors on danse. As an actor, he has also appeared in the short film BIGGER, directed by Élise Gaiardo, for which he won Best Actor at the GOSH International Festival in Paris.
