Electro Chaabi

Hind Meddeb - Focus mahraganat

2013

In the 2000s, a new musical scene set the youth of Cairo’s working-class neighbourhoods alight: mahraganat—also known as electro chaabi—a style blending Egyptian popular song, electronic beats and rap-like freestyles. Shot handheld by filmmaker Hind Meddeb (Paris Stalingrad, 2019), artists recount, through the streets and celebrations of the megacity, the emergence and rise of a movement that has become an outlet for youngsters constrained by the prohibitions imposed by Egyptian society.
